CHIROPRACTIC AND HEADACHES

If you suffer from headaches one of the best things that you can do is see if a natural, chiropractic approach is right for you. Everyday more and more Americans are seeking the care from chiropractors for a wide assortment of conditions, with headaches being one of the most common conditions being treated.

WHAT CAUSES HEADACHES?

Frankly, there are a number of known causes for headaches. These can run the gamut from strong smells and intense lights, to a variety of health conditions such as high blood pressure, sinus infections, dental conditions, eye problems, fevers, tumors, and even not eating at a particular time of the day.

One of the most common types of headaches are stress headaches. Research indicates that up to 90% of all headaches are stress related.

WHAT MAKES THE HEAD ACHE?

Surprisingly it is not what is inside the head or brain that hurts. In fact the brain is essentially a non-pain sensitive structure. Frequently during brain surgery patients are

fully awake and conversing with their doctors.

What is painful inside the head are arteries, veins, membranes which wrap around the brain, and special nerves which are contained within the head known as cranial nerves.

When these structures become stressed, irritated, stretched, or inflamed headaches can often occur.

TREATMENT

Treatment for headaches can vary, depending upon the type of headache which exists.

The most common treatment of headaches is typically pain medication, whether it be over the counter, such as aspirin, or by prescription, such as by a family physician. While

these medications offer some with temporary relief, rarely do they address the underlying cause of the problem.

THE CHIROPRACTIC APPROACH

At Dunlap Chiropractic, P.C. we help people daily find relief of headache pain. It is safe to say that over the years we have helped thousands of Four State residents relieve their headache pain. This would include people who have suffered from chronic migraines over the years, to patients who just “slept wrong on their neck.”

At our office we employ a variety of techniques, each one planned to get you relief as quickly as possible, with the goal of addressing the underlying cause of the pain.

The tools and techniques we use in our office to address your specific problem are numerous. These could include one, and many times a combination of the following procedures: chiropractic adjustments by hand, chiropractic adjustments with a low force adjusting instrument for weak or tentative patients, physical therapy, acupuncture, auricular therapy, trigger point therapy, traction, or exercise.

ABOUT DR. DUNLAP

While a lot of chiropractic offices have come and gone over the years, I have been in full time practice, at this same location since 1987. During this time it has been my most sincere pleasure to work with and for, some of the nicest, friendliest patients in the Four

State area.

I am a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. This is where

chiropractic was created in 1895. At Palmer I was blessed with the opportunity to learn a variety of techniques from some of the finest instructors in the world. It was there that

I learned about the history of our profession, and began to employ some of the true and tested, as well as some of the more contemporary methods of healing.

Since graduating from Palmer, I have gone on to further my education in a number of areas. Currently I am the only doctor in this part of the state recognized as a Distinguished Fellow in Chiropractic Biophysics. This is a very demanding course of

study, which teaches doctors how to provide a high level of care to their patients, which in turn allows doctors to teach patients methods which they can employ to strengthen and stabilize areas of weakness in their spine. Presently there are only a handful of doctors in Missouri who have completed this training, most of them are either in Kansas City or St. Louis.

I am one of only several doctors in the Joplin area to have gone back to school and received additional training in acupuncture. In our office, I do not perform the traditional forms of acupuncture which employ the insertion of needles into the body. Instead, we

utilize what is known as electro acupuncture. Both traditional acupuncture and electro acupuncture work extremely well. The advantage of electro acupuncture is that the treat-ments require much less time, and for those who hate needles, don’t worry, there are no

needles.

Additionally, I am one of the few doctors in Missouri who has undergone additional training and is recognized as a Certified Insurance Claims Consultant.

Over the years I have, and remain very active in our state and local chiropractic associations. In the past I have served as President of the Four State Chiropractic

Association, and as President of the Missouri State Chiropractic Association Political

Action Committee.
